CBD oil has developed a great reputation for use in pets as its healing properties provide natural assistance to dogs in the same way it helps us humans. Research shows CBD oil benefits pets in many ways.

Some of the main benefits of CBD oil include:

  • Reduces anxiety
  • Assists with sleep quality
  • Eases pain by reducing inflammation such as in Osteoarthritis
  • Protects the nervous system
  • Increases appetite and reduces nausea
  • CBD oil also helps pets with cancer. Pain, anxiety, inflammation, nausea and poor appetite are commonly seen in cancer patients.
  • Helps with epilepsy and seizure control
  • Helps with gastrointestinal disturbances and restore a healthy gut

Understanding more…… the terminology:

CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a natural compound extracted from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, which interacts with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system to help treat anxiety, pain and inflammation, naturally.

Endocannabinoid system is responsible for keeping the body in balance during illness and injury.

How it works

Endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex receptor and chemical messenger system in the body of humans and animals, which regulates many functions and processes including sleep, pain & inflammation, motor control, muscle & bone growth, stress, mood, digestion & metabolism. These functions are the homeostasis or stability of the body’s internal environment.

The Entourage effect describes the synergy of Cannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, all found in the cannabis plant. Together, they enhance each other’s effect and allow lower, safer doses of a CBD broad spectrum product to used in your pet.

The active components:

CBD = cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a natural compound extracted from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, which interacts with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system to help treat anxiety, pain and inflammation, naturally.

THC = tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the chemical responsible for the ‘high’ or psychotropic effect associated with Marijuana. Both THC and Marijuana are illegal in Hong Kong.

Cannabinoids is a broad term to describe the natural compounds (including CBD) that interact with the receptors of the Endocannabinoid system.

Terpenes give the plants their smell. When these interact with cannabinoids, they increase their benefits (the Entourage effect). This aspect has been studied in veterinary medicine.

Flavonoids give taste and colour to plants and may have antioxidant action on the body’s cells.

The plants:

Cannabis is the plant. Cannabis sativa is most commonly used in CBD oil production.

Marijuana describes Cannabis plant with more than 0.3% THC. Both THC and Marijuana are illegal in Hong Kong.

Hemp is a Cannabis plant with less than 0.3% THC and no psychotropic effects.

Types of CBD products

Broad spectrum products carry all the benefits of the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids to utilise the entourage effect and help stabilise the Endocannabinoid system.

Isolate products contain only one cannabinoid: CBD. This does not include the benefits of the other cannabinoids and the entourage effect found in broad spectrum products.

Full spectrum products describe Broad spectrum with the inclusion of the illegal THC component.

Why we want to help guide you:

Because it’s what we do at Paws in Motion. Integrating therapies is our thing!

Because we know how your pet’s current condition, medication, and age (young or old) may influence the dose of CBD they should receive. We want to help adjust the dose to best effect.

Because we want to apply the science to help guide on therapy and dosing for your pet, depending on what we are targeting: anxiety and sleep; pain, mobility and inflammation or other conditions.

Tips: Senior pets and pressure sores- bedding advice

Similar to humans, dogs may develop pressure sores if they lie on their bed or floor for long periods of time, if their mobility is reduced. Pressure sores often develop over bony prominences (the bony points with very thin skin and little fat covering) such as the hips and elbows causing damage to the skin barrier and discomfort.
